Just around the corner

As we walk into the kitchen of my childhood home I can smell the turkey cooking, I see the wrapping paper, scissors, and tape strewn across the table but really more than anything I am thrilled be under the same roof as those people who love me, support me and encourage me no matter what.  This morning we celebrated Christmas with JP, my mom’s dad, and Aunt Brid, my Mom’s sister.  They arrived about 15 minutes after Em and I pulled down the driveway.  I was thrilled when Em decided to make the 1 ½ drive with me even though she has a final tomorrow.  Perhaps I had selfish motives for talking her into coming; you see if she came, then Ad would come too and the whole family would be together.

It was a wonderful afternoon with lunch, gift exchange, and finally a tour of the PF building.  Despite the beautiful gifts I received, my favorite part of this and any holiday celebration is when the whole family piles around the massive dining room table.  There is something about everyone around the same table, passing the potatoes, talking about what new events are happening, and simply socializing.  It for sure beats sitting on my couch with a microwaveable dinner!

This Christmas celebration was extra special for another reason.  JP has not been able to make the 2 hour journey to Wash MO for the past 6 years.  Significant changes have occurred over those 6 years and at time I would have bet money against JP every being able to make the trip again.  It goes to show how unpredictable the future is.  You never know what is around the corner, good or bad.  We were very blessed this season that when we turned the corner a good surprise was waiting.

My name is Meg and I am currently a Geriatrics and Palliative Care Fellow at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.  I started this blog several years ago as a way to remember and talk about what I experienced while studying abroad in Rwanda during the summer of 2009.

The blog has now continued and still serves as a way to let my friends and family know what I have been up to and a way for me to open up.
